Jesse's Flying adventure

Updated: Nov 21, 2023

I've been thinking about a flight like this even since I flew from Round Mtn to Glacier Peak in 2016. The day started overcast and scratchy when we launched but light thermals at ridge height were turning to strong climbs higher up in an atmosphere that was nice and unstable up high. The first climb at Dirtyface took a little searching but then it was game on, booming mountain flying. I was a little hesitant making the initial move north from Clark Mountain, I was a tiny bit worried that we might encounter more stable west-side air at the crest, and I was tempted to be cautious and I push back east to search for climbs over chihuahua ridge but being with Subir helped, he led out to the north and after we found a couple climbs it was clear the crest was working well. I had initially had thoughts of potentially pushing out on the north side of the Suiattle River but looking at the long unlandable sections of that route from the air, and the fact that we had easy flying along the crest going north made me think more about Cascade pass and maybe even the possibility on flying over the pickets to Baker. The crest was easy flying as small clouds started to form, it was easy to find lift and we stayed high. The spires at Washington pass looked pretty close as we flew north but I was also drawn towards Baker. I have spent a lot of time flying near Baker looking at Glacier peak and it seemed unlikely, just trying to connect 2 cascade volcanos was alluring. Cloud formation was starting to look quite good to the south and fairly blue to the northwest so I expected our route to get a little more difficult. Turning around may have led to a longer duration flight but I wanted to pull off the east side to west connection. We crossed Agnes Creek on a diagonal heading for Cascade Pass. The climbs were still strong on the Ptarmigan traverse side but harder to work with. Once we were over cascade pass the scenery got really good. We worked lighter more broken climbs and pushed west. Looking back I wished we'd slowed down and searched more for higher climbs.

Ihave no regrets about ending the epic flight in a nice big field downriver from Marblemount
